Poinsettias are plants native to Central America and in particular an area of southern Mexico known as Taxco del Arcon.

The Aztec used to use them to make dye for clothes and their sap for treating fevers.

In 1825, the US Ambassador to Mexico saw the plants and became interested in them. He sent some back to Carolina, USA, and began growing them and sending them to friends.  His name Joel Roberst Poinsett!

But why are poinsettias and Christmas linked together?

Blogging is something that has grown substantially in recent years. With the current global situation, COVID-19, never mind other changes around the world, many people are choosing to share their experiences with others through blogging.

A blog is an online diary for some, as a way of sharing their experiences and thoughts.

Life used to be simpler, made up of three stages – childhood and adolescence, going to school and living at home, your adult life, working, raising a family, moving into your own home and finally retirement.  This worked socially, psychologically and economically for many people.

All of this has changed. In the past, people may have taken a course or trained in a specific career, such as accountancy or carpentry.  But today, it is common for people to have three or more, retraining several times as they move from one career to another.

The UK Government recently announced that they are cutting funding for over 5000 further education courses due to poor attendance numbers. You could think that these courses are being cut because they are niche courses, but they include courses such as hair dressing, agriculture, horticulture, performing arts, cooking and horse care. In the modern world, we still need the people who are able to grow our crops and tend to our plants. We still need people who are knowledgeable about animals and their care.
