Cat Behaviour: 5 Important Body Languages

By ACS Bookshop UK on May 16, 2016 in Pets | comments

Read all our blog posts at www.acsebooks.comCats are now one of the top most popular domesticated pets across the world, and yet we have still so much to learn about their psychology and behaviour.  We assume that all our feline friends are happy, but cats get stressed and anxious about situations, just as much as other pets.  By sitting back and actually observing their behaviour and body language, we can tell so much about how they are feeling.

Here are 5 common body languages we may see in our pet cats:

  1. Laid on back with stomach exposed – this usually means the cat is relaxed and is trusting.
  2. Slow blinking eyelids – the cat is in complete relaxation, without actually being a sleep.
  3. The tail twitching side to side – occurs when the cat is in hunt mode, or has his eyes on something.  We can also see this behaviour when we are stroking a cat and they are getting annoyed, they will begin to flick the tail from side to side, then this is usually followed by a swipe of claws.
  4. The cat has flattened ears – this usually means the cat is feeling threatened.
  5. Arched back position – fear or aggression.  Is usually observed if a threat surprises the cat.
