Interestingly, recent research has shown that there has been a significant increase in greenery over the last 35 years.  Researchers belief that this is due to the increase of levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. 32 researchers have looked at satellite imagery from NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer instruments to determine the level of greenery and leaf cover over the planet. They found overall increases, and in continental America, the greenery has doubled.

Increased carbon dioxide levels leads to an increase in photosynthesis in plants, which in turn increases plant growth.  85% percent of the Earth’s land that is ice free is covered with vegetation, with 32% of the Earth’s total surface area covered by green leaves. Carbon dioxide is not the only reason for this, they also estimate that nitrogen has an impact upon greenery levels.

The increase in carbon dioxide is beneficial to plants, but is also the main culprit in climate change.
